WHY JACK?

Few influential people in the media now objectively criticize government officials, and the quality of journalism is quickly declining as a result. Cable news needs a journalist who will report on issues that matter and hold public figures accountable for their mistakes. We cannot think of anyone better for this job than Jack Cafferty.

Cafferty does not waste time reporting on topics that are not important to the American people. He uses his influence to inform viewers rather than entertain them. While some journalists spend their time covering celebrity gossip and sex scandals, Cafferty is busy focusing on critical issues that affect the public. Cafferty often reports on a greater number of important issues in the short amount of air time he gets than many anchors do for an entire broadcast.

The goal of this campaign is for Jack Cafferty to have his own weekday newscast. Giving Cafferty his own show would allow him to cover more topics and greatly improve the quality of cable news.

BIOGRAPHY

With all that he has experienced throughout his career, Jack Cafferty is as qualified as anyone to report on the problems facing the world.

Cafferty, 63, is currently a commentator on CNN’s afternoon newscast, The Situation Room. He also hosts the weekend financial show In The Money.

Ever since he joined The Situation Room in the summer of 2005, Cafferty has gradually built up a cult following. In his segment on the show, The Cafferty File, he poses questions to viewers and then reads their responses on the air. His passionate and often unpredictable ramblings on issues have made him a favorite among bloggers.

Cafferty began his journalism career in 1960 in Reno, Nevada, after he decided that he could not afford medical school. He later went on to anchor the local television newscast for WHO-TV in Des Moines, Iowa. Cafferty hosted a popular segment at the station entitled “Cafferty Is” in which he would demonstrate how to perform various activities.

After leaving Des Moines, Cafferty spent more than 20 years covering financial and local news for several New York television stations. In 1977, he started to anchor programs for WNBC-TV in New York, including Live at Five and The Scarborough-Cafferty Report. He also anchored Newsline New York on WNYW-TV from 1989-1992. Cafferty then anchored WPIX's evening newscast with Kaity Tong until 1998.

Cafferty soon made his transition to cable news and began working for CNNfn, a now non-operational financial news network. Following the September 11 terrorist attacks, he hosted a late-night call-in show on CNN for viewers to voice their opinions. Although the show only lasted for a short time, his performance propelled him to a spot on CNN’s American Morning. Cafferty’s “Here's What I Don't Get” segment on the show allowed him to voice his opinions on a variety of subjects.

Cafferty has also received numerous honors during his career, including an Emmy Award, the Edward R. Murrow Award and the New York AP State Broadcasters Award.
